Some have it on their backs, others on their arms and one even has it on her breast. But the one thing a hundred Kiwis, mostly strangers, have in common is the shape of their new tattoo a map of New Zealand.

People of all ages and all walks of life went to Suite Gallery in Newtown yesterday to let tattooists Tommy Downs and Ra Kopu etch an outline of the country into their bodies for art's sake.

The day-long tattoo extravaganza, Where You Stay?, was the brainchild of artist Wayne Youle, who came up with the idea for TVNZ series New Artland.

Each person was allowed to have as many red dots as they liked tattooed on to their map, to signify places important to them. Not surprisingly, most people included Wellington on their map, but Youle said there were a few unusual choices too. "We've got a Stewart Island. There's a Winton. What's lovely is we've got a few dots off the map."

Artist Suzanne Tamaki, her partner John Darby and her son Rameka Tamaki were among those lining up for their 15 minutes under the needle.

Caroline Tamaki had seven dots added to the map on her wrist, "for Matariki, the Seven Sisters".

She chose Cape Reinga, "because when you die that's where your spirit leaps off"; Auckland, where she used to live; Kawhia and Rautoki, where her grandfather and grandmother came from; Wellington; Otaki, where she now lives; and Aoraki Mt Cook, "because it's the cloud-piercer, and that's what I want to do, pierce the clouds".

Caroline Wallace's map was more sparse. "I just got Wellington."

The exchange student, from Austin, Texas, said that although she had travelled a lot, she had Wellington added because it now felt like home.

"I thought it was most significant. It's something to remember it by for the rest of my life."

As a proud kiwi living in australia it is great to see the "stay at home kiwis" embracing what those that leave realise the minute they leave....your culture, heritage and home are things you should be proud of. The comment: antipodean podmen #42 01:57 pm Mar 11 2009 Further evidence of a descent into Australian-inspired boganism. Over here the nationalistic "love it or leave" it crowd like to tatoo their mutant stars from the flag.

Australians are finally displaying a pride in there country. that is a good thing. However There is a sinister side to the Cronulla race riots inspired patriotism. I dont believe New Zealanders would ever decend into that kind of bigoted racist patriotism.

I myself, a Pakeha. living in brisbane just got a tattooed map of new zealand on my back. It is filled with Ta Moko representing my culture and family. It was done by my best mate (his first). I did this to show my love for my home, my culture and my histoy. I am proud that people will see it and know I am a kiwi. to those who jsut got these new zealand tattoos...Be proud you are a kiwi and be proud of what that means.

all you negative guys need to get a life, go for a run or something and get your ass away from a computer (I've already climbed up the side of a canyon today thank you) and show a little love for this amazing beautiful friendly country. If it's not amazing and beautiful where you live, oped your eyes and pull the stick out of your asses when you go for that run!!!

this makes me cringe. It's small-minded patriotism at its worst. Not to mention the fact that loads of people have the same tattoo, it's like a barcode. Get a life, and some original thought!

It's like an instant sign of being an idiot. I hope we're not going the same way but every time I go home I notice more and more pointless nationalistic display.

I was lucky enough to be one of the 100 people on the day to get a map of NZ tattoo. Wayne Youle's "where you stay" project was a wonderful concept that has created a community of people that shared an experience. It has the ability to start a conversation with a person you dont know but happen to meet on the street and have in common the map of NZ tattoo with red dots to signify the places in NZ that people considered to be important to them. To Wayne, Tommy and Ra congratulations on an extremely successful day.

Kia ora! I've had the same tat for a few years now and still loving it, loving the positive comments and loving the fact I'll always be part of NZ no matter where I am! Live it up Kiwis! And to all the haters - 2 thumbs down!
