It was a family affair for the Supreme Winner of the Mercedes Prix de Fashion award at Auckland's Ellerslie Racecourse yesterday.

Olivia Moor, 19, of Howick, scooped the major prize, following in the footsteps of her big-sister Charlotte who won last year.

The AUT graphic-design student was also crowned winner of the Under-25 award in what she described as a "summer-inspired silk chiffon number" made by her mother Alison Moor. Mum and daughter designed it together "from material sourced from a vintage fabric store".

To complete the pretty-in-pink look, her fascinator was also made by her mother and was teamed with vintage gloves she bought in the US and high heels by designer Andrea Biani. Moor got to drive away in a Mercedes Benz which she has won on a three-month lease. She also won a cruise and a $1500 shopping voucher at Jet streetwear. Moor told Sunday News she is "really excited" about having a car to herself, because she currently shares one with sister Charlotte.

Race day organisers estimate more than 20,000 people turned up for the event, a possible record turnout. The tills were ringing and the crowds lining up to have a punt while enjoying the searing sun. Mayor John Banks was at the day with wife Amanda. He said he enjoyed coming along and supporting the races. "I'm very pleased, it's a great event," he added. Dressed in a dark blue suit alongside Amanda in more suitable summer dress, Banks joked "it's a nice day out here, we're just here having some fun and picking up a few votes". Amanda chipped in, "Oh, and losing money."
