Wellington singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser has scooped five nominations in the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards for 2011.

Fraser, who is based in Australia, has been nominated for album of the year for Flags, single of the year for  Something in the Water, as well a best female artist, best pop album and the People's Choice Award.

Wellington bands and artists have also been nominated in other categories. Shihad, also based in Australia, have been nominated for best group and best rock album.

Former Fur Patrol Julia Deans is up for best female artist and best pop album.

Heavy metallers Beastwars are a finalist for best rock album, while Trinity Roots is a finalist for best roots album.

Wellington's John Psathas and the New Zealand String Quartet are finalists for best classical album.

Auckland-based The Naked and Famous has garnered the most nominations - six - as well as one in the best music video category. Hip-hop star Ladi6 has also been nominated in five categories and in the best music video category.

The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards ceremony is at Auckland's Vector Arena on November 3.

Also announced were the Vodafone Music Awards technical awards. Weta Workshop employee Nick Keller won the technical award for best album cover for his work on Beastwars' debut album.

No finalists are announced for the Vodafone Highest Selling NZ Single, the Highest Selling NZ Album, NZ On Air Radio Airplay Record of the Year and the International Achievement awards. These will be awarded at the ceremony.

Dragon, the recipient of the Legacy Award  will also be inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.
