Sir Cliff Richard got fans a-rockin' in Wellington but some were left reelin' after he took to the stage with ''good evening Auckland''.

Gwen Parsons, who was at the TSB Arena when Sir Cliff's Still Reelin' and A-Rockin' tour passed through last night, said the gaffe was greeted with a ''stunned silence'' by the crowd.

''People may have thought he was being funny,'' Mrs Parsons said.

However, it became clear Sir Cliff had been geographically mistaken, when he came back after the break and apologised, saying he understood he was in Wellington.

The show itself was great but marred by an excessive break and an over-heated auditorium, she said.

Steve Howard, also in the audience, said fans were ''left reeling'' when Sir Cliff greeted the ''Auckland'' audience.

Dominion Post reviewer Simon Sweetman gave the show a rave review.
