Letter: Independence needs verifying

OPINION: You report that a group of rich-listers, libertarians and neo-conservatives will assemble in February to discuss how they would reshape our country were they given carte blanche (Nov 4).
While doing this, they will raise money for what The Dominion Post calls "independent think tanks", namely the Centre for Independent Research and the Centre for Resource Management.
It's inconceivable that the work of these "centres" could be independent from the influence of their very wealthy, politically motivated patrons. I wonder if this "independent" status is something your reporter verified or explored, or was the reference a simple cut-and-paste from a press release? This is a rhetorical question.
Please don't give these people a free run in our country's most important daily newspaper.
