Reasons it's good to be single - #6: Remotes

Everyone has a secret TV addiction. I love reality

For one of my flatmates, it's the Rock of Love series (featuring the washed up Poison singer Bret Michaels), and for mine it's probably Keeping up with the Kardashians. *cringe*

Actually I think I'd watch almost any rubbish on E! Channel - Girls of the Playboy Mansion, Kendra, True Hollywood Stories...

It's terrible stuff, the lot of it. Car crash TV.

But it's addictive.

Oh, and then there's Shortland Street.

Why don't guys ever admit they watch Shortland Street? And some girls for that matter? Everyone does, even if it's accidental.

I'm not saying it's thought provoking, dramatic TV but it serves a purpose. After a hard day at work I can flick it on and literally guarantee not to use my brain for 30 minutes.

Awesome stuff.

I've come to like my daily TV watching routine.

It's nice to know I control the channel I'm watching, whether it's some incredibly interesting doco, the 6pm news instead of whatever else is on at that hour or E! Channel drivel.

But when you get into a relationship, TV appetites, much like those of food or sex, can clash.

Control freak How does a TV One news watcher cope when their partner is a TV3 news watcher?

Banish each other to different rooms at different ends of the house to cope with the conflict?

I've met guys who love Coro (argh!) and who obsessively watch Sky's Fashion channel (urgh!).

As much as I love sport I don't think I could handle a day watching golf (yawn) or stay in the room while someone laughed at Everybody Loves Raymond (worst show ever).

Luckily I'm a TV lover so I watch almost anything, especially a lot of shows that guys tend to enjoy. It still makes me laugh though how guys treat a remote much like a dog with a bone; standing over it, protecting it, eyeing up anyone who comes near it.

I realise relationships are all about compromise (and I'm sure that's what the creators of spilt-screen TVs, My Sky, Tivo and On Demand were thinking when they came up with their relationship-saving products) but man it's nice to have to have the sweet little remote in my own hand.

What annoying TV habits do your other half, ex or you have? Channel hopping? Watching terrible shows? Do they allow you to watch your secret TV obsessions?

Would love to hear from you - ideas, comments, anything. Email greer2.0@gmail.com with your issues or questions - and while you're there, follow me on Twitter or Facebook

Ok this one I can sort of agree on for a change. My man is a bit of a remote hog and that would be ok if it didn't automatically switch to the sports channels all. the. time. I'm talking about every ad break, whenever I leave my chair or even turn my back for a second. Sometimes I sit on the remote so he can't find it. Luckily I don't really care much about tv and he does respect that there are a couple of shows I must see. One thing we do agree on though is that as soon as we here that Shorty St opening music we scream and change the channel to something else - anything else! Shortland Street is an awful, awful programme. Sorry Greer.

Last boyfriend I had didn't really mind what channel or programs I watched, not a TV watcher.. unless it was the sopranos (he fancied himself as being like tony soprano and that it depicted his family..)

On the other hand I will admit to watching rubbish on the tube. Americas next top model (I didn't like ours it was lame sort of like NZIdol lame), Project Runway, Top Chef, Who wants to be a millionaire.. I think Jane Yee did a blog on yelling obtuse things at the TV during sport.. well I do it at game shows especially when the person is being stupid or doesn't know the very easy answer. Wipe out, in fact when theres no topgear we watch wipeout twice on freeview, I also have some weird desire to watch Police 10/7 and Motorway patrol every week although every time something happens in Auckland I go.. ohh I know about that already.

I think the worst thing I can admit to is that after 8 seasons (into season 9 now) I still watch Smallville. The story lines are terrible, the acting is worse yet I still watch.

I also habitually watch normal programs like Outrageous fortune, Bones, Nurse Jackie, Cold Case, Lie to Me, Top Gear, NCIS and The Mentalist

Hubby and I have very different TV habits. For the TV's in the lounge and the bedroom we EACH have our own remote. We also have a "Man Cave" where I can banish hubby to which has a reasonably big telly.

He will tolerate Top Model (so long as rugby isnt on - then I am banished to the bedroom) and will scurry away to his laptop to occupy himself rather than watch anything from the E-Channel. I show the same courtesy to him when the league is on.

Sadly she and I have television tastes that have a couple of serious clash of taste moments. She likes Shortland Street, while I have a fully functioning brain.

Luckily we have a lot of common ground, or there would be carnage. So we can sit down in front of How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory and a few others.

Everybody Loves Raymond ... do they? Really? I'm with you on that one, it is a show that has all the blinding wit and insight of a slightly moist cardboard box.

I would much rather have to fight for the remote than share it in a flat situation. At least you can just tell your man off if you don't like something!

I wont lie, he is a hog though. Every time I walk in the house the Discovery channel is on - I can't stand Myth Busters and American Chopper. So I let him have his afternoon dose, then we'll watch what I want (eg True Blood, Fringe etc).

And sorry, Shortland Streed is just plain awful.

Everybody is annoyed by Raymond I suspect.

Other than Top Gear, there is generally nothing on TV that I can't miss. If something "good" is on and I'm near the TV and remember that it's on I'll watch it. Otherwise not so bothered.

Why would anyone watch TV when they have the internet?

paul   #8   09:30 am Oct 19 2009

My MySky is clogged wtih reality TV shows. America's Next Top Eating Disorder, Fashion Runaways, MasterChef - the Australian version is the STUPIDEST PIECE OF CRAP EVER CONCEIVED! If the Kiwi version follows the Australian format instead of the UK one - I will kick the TV in.

And now something weird (it's filmed out of focus for some reason) with RuPaul and a bunch of guys in drag. Vibe Channel has a lot to answer for.

I do watch Shortland St though. You have no choice after ten years of it being on in the background. It grows on you. Much like Genital Warts.

Personally, I dont think it's annoying in the slightest, but others have found it so... If cricket is on, then that's what I will be watching. As much as possible. Other than that though, I dont watch a lot of TV, so I dont really have many clashes with people.

TV watching habits that bug me? Well, I can't stand survivor. So if anyone I'm with wants to watch that, that's fine, I'll just toddle off and do something else in the meantime.

But the one that really gets up my nose is channel surfing. Not generally, but if I'm watching a programme, people dont need to start flicking through the channels to find out what's on. There are other and better ways of doing that. Grrrr :o)
