LATEST: KiwiRail has apologised to passengers on Wellington's Johnsonville line who had to walk along the tracks after a fault brought trains to a halt this morning.

KiwiRail National Passenger Manager Ross Hayward said the company was investigating the circumstances.

At least two services on the line - the 7.45am train to Johnsonville and the 8.12am service back to Wellington  - were cancelled earlier this morning due to the fault. Some commuters were transferred to buses because of the breakdown.

The problems were caused by a points fault at Ngaio, according to a commuter text message alert issued by Tranz Metro this morning.

Passengers on one stranded Wellington-bound train were asked to disembark and walk along the tracks.

Dominion Post reporter Nathan Beaumont was on-board and said commuters started to file off the train around 9.30am, even though they were only about a kilometre away from the Wellington station.

He said passengers had to disembark the train via a ladder then walk along the tracks.

Passenger Steve Arnold said: "It is so frustrating. It just keeps happening and all I want is a reliable train service."

Another passenger, Andrea Tyson, was looking on the bright side. "At least it happened on a Friday. If it was Monday I think I would be tearing my hair out."

"Staff became concerned at the delay and decided the best course of action for passengers to disembark and be taken a short distance down onto Thorndon Quay to meet buses that had been ordered," Mr Hayward said.

"Unfortunately, we could only get one bus at short notice and it was unable to pick up all passengers.

"The chain of events was far from ideal and we are carrying out an investigation to help us understand what happened, why it happened and what we can learn from it."

He said trying to communicate with passengers on a full train had proved difficult.

"We are conscious of the need to communicate but trying to talk to almost 400 passengers on a unit not fitted with a public address system is challenging.

"We apologise to passengers who had a long and uncomfortable journey."

Around 11am Tranz Metro said all services were again running on time.

But this afternoon the train line was again experiencing problems, with Tranz Metro warning Johnsonville commuters that services were running up to 10 minutes late because of a mechanical fault. Services were expected to be running to timetable again by 7pm.

Nice customer public relations! Are you saying that your clients don't have the right to complain when their day is stuffed up? If you are upset with how you are spoken to can I suggest that you take your complaints to your bosses. I am sure that your bosses would love to know your identity!

I am no longer living in Wgtn but there has always been problems with the line for as long as I can remember. If I also remember right it has to do with the fact that NZRail can't update the trains due to the fact that the newer models don't fit through the tunnels. If this is the case then NZRail need to look at updating the tunnels or find trains that fit. The trains have got to be at least 40-50+ years old by now.

I live 5 mins walk from a johnsonville line train station yet I take my car to the city every day as its the only reliable mode of transport here. The Johnsonville line is a joke. I agree with Jim 'Trans Muppets'. This whole year there has been delay after delay after delay, and 9/10 weekends there is a bus replacement service as they work on the lines. With all this work you'd at least think you could get a train and track that worked.

This seems like a good reporting area for the Dom Post. Why not do some research on how many kiwi rail employees, particualrty senior managers, commute on the trains. Every time I hear kiwi rail staff quoted it sounds like they have no idea what is really going on. But then I am sure they all have nice carparks and can avoid the trains.

I talked to a guard a bit today and he was about as frustarted as the passengers. Clearly kiwi rail is not planning for these sorts of problems and cannot manage them well. Given the frequency of the problems that seems like very poor management to me and it would be nice to see soem accountablity there.

At Ngaio, I was meant to catch the 9:15 but it was already late. We didn't get a replacement bus until about 9:45, and we didn't have to pay. There were over 100 people in total waiting to get to Wellington, so the train conductors had to contact for two more buses. One was even flagging down cars to see if they were heading in to Wellington, to see if they could take passengers in. Some people who had their cars actually took them in, versus waiting for the bus. I would like to see better contingencies in place though for this kind of thing. I don't necessarily always want a free ride, sometimes I just need to know timeframes so I can plan ahead if need be. Hopefully they'll consider some anyway, but I still enjoy catching the train!

I was on the train. As a foreigner to this conutry, I am curious why the city council keeps on ignoring the city's infrastructure. e.g. railway or network. It's strange to me the city council has plan to build a big stadium in the southern city but no plan to upgrade railway or network. Which one is related to our everyday live? A big stadium or a stable transportation?

This is how useless tranzmetro are: I was on this train, and my wife was on the train behind, and when I sent her a text message to tell her we were stuck, the driver of that trainphoned me to ask what was happening because no one had told him why he was delayed.

And yes, the replacement buses were a myth. We all walked into work.

I was also on the train. We were told some time after the train stopped that buses would be organised, but then nothing else. After about 45 minutes stopped on the train, and with a very full carriage (people standing cheek to cheek almost, as the train was late) we eventually were allowed to leave. No instructions were given to me. I followed the people in front and walked the short distance to the road and then on to work. Despite Kiwirail saying recently they would learn and put into action better communication with staff on the train when events happen, they failed again to keep commuters informed what was going on. I really like taking the train, but some respect back from Kiwirail would be appreciated for these occassional problems.

"Commuters are currently being transferred to buses because of the breakdown."

What buses? Most had to walk all the way to the station and some chose to pay a bus ticket (at first we thought it's a replacement bus, but apparently not cause we had to pay)to go to our destination.
