It was a jaw-dropping sight as machinegun-toting soldiers drove through Wellington looking ready to fire at anybody in their way.

But the sinister-looking masked troops riding shotgun in a convoy of Pinzgauer armoured vehicles yesterday were just preparing for their next deployment.

Army spokeswoman Nicole Munro-Johnson said they were due to leave for Afghanistan next month and troops were expected to be stationed with the Kiwi military support element at Kabul Airport.

Training for the deployment, they drove from Trentham Camp to Wellington Airport and back, a dry run for a war zone convoy, practising situation awareness watching for potential threats crew communications and teamwork.

Why not keep them here, before dealing with international terrorism, surely we should sort out the domestic terrorist problem first.
