Homes in the Lower Hutt suburb of Stokes Valley were evacuated this afternoon after a home owner discovered chemicals stored under his new house.

Police, the Fire Service and army personnel were called to the property at 3.35pm and evacuated about 10 houses.

They were contacted by a home owner who had recently bought a house in the suburb and found a type of acid stored under the house had crystallised, Radio New Zealand reported.

The army was preparing to dispose of the chemical, a police central communications spokesman said.
