Greater Wellington regional council is proposing a 2.2 per cent rate increase for the 2010-11 rates year.
The proposed increase in overall rates revenue, without the water levy included, is 2.2 per cent.
The increase would add between $2.48 and $8.25 to average annual household rates bills, council chairwoman Fran Wilde said.

@ Ian McKinnon well said.
Also don't forget 1) All the stuff ups and budget over runs on almost every project they do. 2) Most of the increases are due to public transport (more subsidies). Rate payers shouldn't be paying for getting the general populace to work. I don't expect the government to put fuel in my car so why do people think i should be paying half there bus /train fair?
When the hell will this ever end. Take a look at the plush offices and vehicles we are suppying these deadbeats, and then ask why there is a need for the increase. Come on Rodney, get off your arse and "Act". I for one have had enough of being screwed to keep these leeches living the life of Riley. They do nothing.

Come on, It's Rodney your talking about here. He's only good for one thing, and that's busting other peoples perks and dancing with the stars.
Rodney does have a loud bark, but unfortunately not much of a bite. I think local governments have figured out that he's a 'Gummy little puppy with no bite.' Feed him a little treat (perk) and he goes into his corner and stays quite, just like an obedient little dog should.
Rates Increase + GST increase = a good 'old rorting' for the Government.
