A woman is dead after the car she was driving struck a power pole.
The crash occurred near Gisborne tonight before 7pm. The impact brought down power lines, interfering with rescue attempts, a police spokesperson said.
However, it appeared the female driver and sole occupant of the car could have died instantly from the crash.
The occupant has not yet been officially identified and police are seeking the woman's next of kin.
It was not known what caused the vehicle to hit the pole, though weather conditions in the area were wet, the spokesperson said.
