A scrub fire above a Lower Hutt suburb is being treated as suspicious.

The large amount of smoke from the fire, which broke out above Naenae about 4pm today, meant the Fire Service received up to 30 emergency calls, fire communications shift manager David Meikle said.

It was a ''medium-sized'' fire and was put out by 5pm.

It was in the shrubs above Waddington Drive.

The cause of the fire was being treated as suspicious.
