The death of a young man whose body was found in Taupo this morning has been referred to the coroner.

Taupo police Sergeant Chris Turnbull said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

"We are still in the process of finding out who it is and what the story is," he said.

The man's body was found behind a retail store in Heu Heu St but it is understood he was not an employee of the store.
