An 18-year-old is in intensive care in Wellington hospital with a serious head injury after an "incident" in a Masterton car park.

Wairarapa police detective senior sergeant Scott Miller said the man was flown to Wellington yesterday.

As witnesses were still being interviewed it was too soon to call the incident a fight, but alcohol was definitely involved and it should give people pause for thought.

"People have to think, because if someone is knocked out and their head hits concrete or something like that, it can be much more serious than was initially intended."

A 19-year-old Masterton man will appear in Masterton District Court this afternoon charged with assault. He may face more serious charges later, Miller said.

Police would like to speak to anyone else who witnessed the incident, which is not believed to have involved any weapons. It occurred around 2.30am yesterday in the car park behind Masterton District Council, opposite McDonald's.

A Wellington Hospital spokesman said the man was in a critical condition this afternoon.

Do you have faith in police solving burglaries?

Yes - there's no faulting their commitment.

Mostly, but they are under-resourced.

Sort of - depends on when and where.

Not really - clearly a low priority for them.

Absolutely not.

Not sure - luckily I've never been burgled.
