A fire in a south Wellington factory has now been contained.
Six fire engines and crew battled the blaze to keep other buildings close to the French Door Factory in Mansfield St, near Wellington Zoo, safe from the flames.
They have now contained the blaze and are dampening it down.
Calls to emergency services begun about 4.45pm. The fire was highly visible and attracted comment on Twitter and other social media.
The initial cause is thought to have started in the factory's hopper - a type of machinery.
A central district police spokesman said both Mansfield Street and Horner St had been cordoned off to allow the fire service to contain the blaze.
Metlink warned bus passengers of delays of up to 20 minutes on the following routes in both directions: Valley Flyer 110,Mairangi 21, Island Bay 1 and Newtown 1.
