Police have released the name of a woman who died in a motorcycle crash in Hawke's Bay this week.

She was Estelamare Paulo Dos Santos, 46, a New Zealand resident from Brazil who was living in Haumoana near Hastings.

The crash between Santos' motorcycle and a car happened at 7am on Monday on State Highway 2 at the Waitangi Bridge between Clive and Napier.

A northbound car had stopped to turn into Waitangi Reserve, police said.

Santos was thought to have attempted to overtake but lost control while trying to avoid an approaching car, which she then collided with.

She died at the scene, and the female driver of the car was taken to hospital in shock.

The crash caused big delays on the highway and on all arterial routes between Napier and Hastings and the expressway.

The police Serious Crash Unit are investigating the crash.
