A Hastings man is in stable condition after being stabbed in the head last night.

A 28-year-old Flaxmere man will appear in Hastings District Court today charged with assaulting a 39-year-old man.

Police were called to a house in the Hastings suburb of Raureka just before 5pm yesterday where they found the injured man.

They carried out a scene examination at a Camberley house where the stabbing is believed to have happened.

"We have a seriously ill victim in hospital," detective sergeant Darren Pritchard said.

A Hawke's Bay Hospital spokeswoman said the man was in a critical but stable condition.
Police are continuing their investigations.
