Wrap up Wellingtonians, hail and snow flurries are likely in the region on this windy, cold day.
MetService forecaster Liz Walsh said, while hail was yet to be reported as falling in Wellington, a radar could detect it in the air and it would possibly fall - most likely in higher areas.
Wellington's temperature was 7degC at 10.30am.
But the Rimutaka Hill was 2.7C and flurries of snow were possible. Southerlies were gusting to gale force at Wellington Airport and Mt Kaukau this morning.
MetService is warning of possible heavy snow for Hawke's Bay and Gisborne ranges tonight, with heavy rain tomorrow.
Snow was also expected on the State Highway 1 Desert Rd in the central North Island tonight.
The weather should clear later tomorrow, and remain clear till Friday in Wellington, but a showery weekend was forecast with cold southerlies.
