A giant metal dog built by Weta Workshop has been found after it was stolen - but it is missing its tail.

Sam, a three-metre-long, 3m-tall Total Span mascot, and the tandem trailer he was in, were stolen from a property in Hastings St, Napier, three nights ago.

The dog and trailer were found by police near Hastings on Thursday night.

Sam belonged to steel building manufacturer Total Span and was shared between the company's franchises in Hawke's Bay, Wanganui and Wairarapa.

The dog cost $16,000 and was built by Weta Workshop about eight years ago.

Hawke's Bay franchise owner Clarke Sweet said he was pleased to have Sam back, but disappointed to see his tail missing.

Police said they were investigating.
