A rush hour crash between a car and a motorcycle caused serious traffic delays in Wellington this evening.

The accident happened at 5:39pm on the Wellington urban motorway after the Terrace Tunnel.

Wellington motorists were warned to expect delays as two of three lanes heading north were blocked, the New Zealand Transport Agency said.

The accident scene was cleared at about 6:15pm but drivers were warned to expect flow-on delays.

A motorcyclist was taken to Wellington Hospital with minor injuries after the accident.

Police said a rash of vehicle breakdowns around the roads during rush hour also slowed traffic.
