Soak up the sun Wellington – it could be the last you see of it for a few days.

Some cloud is expected to spoil the view later this evening, kicking off a week of patchy weather.

‘‘Wellington unfortunately will not be as nice as today, [Monday] it’ll probably be mostly cloudy with a few showers and rain developing in the afternoon,’’ said MetService duty forecaster Mariken van Laanen.

Severe gales could also be on the way, with warnings in place for strong northwesterlies that could turn to gale force.

Forecasters are expecting showers for both Wellington and Wairarapa on Tuesday, with an overnight southerly change and the possibility of hail with that.

Wednesday offers a glimmer of hope with showers expected to clear, but likely to return on Thursday and Friday.
