Wellington is set for a dose of howling wind this afternoon with driving rain on the side.

"Strong to gale" southwesterlies would affect much of the country today, MetService said, with snow, rain, and wind predicted across the country today.

A wind warning has also been issued about coastal Southland, eastern Otago, Golden Bay, Wairarapa, Central Hawkes Bay, and the Coromandel Peninsula.

Auckland was in single digits temperature-wise this morning, with an expected high of 14 degrees Celsius. Gusts could get up to 100kmh this afternoon.

The top of the South Island could expect showers developing this afternoon, while rain on the west coast would clear later in the day.

Christchurch temperatures were sub-zero but conditions mainly fine.

Snow would again impact the southern South Island and the North Island high country. Owing to strong winds there could be snow blizzards in exposed areas.

Caution notes were issued for the Desert Road and owing to snow.
