Porirua gun incident recovers fake weapon

Armed police cordoned off a Porirua street after reports of a person brandishing a gun today – but it turned out to be a fake.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested and will appear in Porirua District Court tomorrow after the Cheshire St incident about 1pm.

The Armed Offenders Squad and dogs were called in and the street blocked off at both ends after a resident reported having a firearm pointed at him.

Police said in a statement tonight that an imitation firearm had been recovered.

Police thanked residents for their patience and co-operation during the incident, and asked that any witnesses contact Porirua police on 02 238 1400.
