Power has been restored to most of the affected 1600 customers in the Wellington suburb of Newlands after Wellington Electricity isolated the fault this afternoon.
A spokesman said it appeared a digger had accidentally hit a power pole, which had caused the outage about 1.15pm today.
Within an hour, power had been restored to all but 252 customers. Its staff were working to fix the problem and hoped to restore electricity to the remaining homes and businesses within about four hours.
