Tranz Metro units on the Kapiti Coast and East by West ferries on Wellington Harbour are out of action tonight.

A KiwiRail spokesman said buses would replace trains between Porirua and Waikanae until further notice.

The commuter train problem was caused by an overhead wire falling on to the tracks between Porirua and Paremata.

Meanwhile an East by West ferries spokeswoman also revealed at 4pm all sailings between Wellington and Eastbourne had been cancelled until further notice due to high winds whipping across Wellington Harbour.
