A second power outage in three days has struck the Wellington suburb of Newlands this evening.

Last Thursday afternoon, a digger accidentally hit a power pole, causing an outage to 1600 Wellington Electricity customers but it was swiftly resolved.

However, an electrical fault plunged the same area into darkness tonight about 5.35pm.

A Wellington Electricity spokesman said this evening that power had been restored to most homes and businesses within an hour but staff were still at the scene trying to fix the problem.
