A car caught fire on State Highway 1 in Plimmerton this morning.

The stretch of highway north of Porirua was closed southbound and NZTA earlier urged motorists to delay travel if possible.

The highway was reopened by 10am.

Police said nobody was in the car, though may have been when it caught fire near the intersection with Grays Rd about 9.30am.

Earlier, State Highway 1 through Kapiti was cleared after a van rolled, causing the road to be blocked.

The single-vehicle crash happened about 6.30am about 1km south of Poplar Ave, Raumati on State Highway 1, police said.

The driver of the van was not injured but the van was earlier blocking the fast lane.

The highway was blocked while the van was removed.

NZTA said the highway was cleared by about 7.10am.
