Police were forced to issue a statement denying Hollywood star Jeff Goldblum died in New Zealand yesterday.
They had received a stream of phone calls about the alleged death of Goldblum, the star of Jurassic Park and Independence Day.
Inspector Kerry Watson said: "There is no such incident and police have no information to provide."
Goldblum's death in New Zealand was actually an online hoax that had circulated at various times since 1999. Amid worldwide mourning of the deaths of popstar Michael Jackson and film star Farrah Fawcett yesterday, the alleged demise of Goldblum went viral on the internet.
He was said to have fallen from a cliff at a luxury Northland golf resort while filming. In the social media platform Twitter where nine of the top 10 trending topics yesterday were about Jackson, Goldblum's "death" was the sixth highest topic of discussion.
However, Goldblum's publicist said he was fine and in Los Angeles.
