ANZ has rushed to take down billboards in Wellington and Auckland after a single complaint that they were offensive.

Lepeti Tea, a child advocate at Porirua community organisation Te Roopu Awhina, took exception to large billboards outside Westpac Stadium and in Taranaki St in Wellington, that read: "In a perfect world, your son would grow up. And your daughter wouldn't."

She said members of Wellington's refugee and Asian communities had raised concerns with her that the billboards reinforced negative aspects of their own cultures that they wanted to escape from.

"Their concern was that ... in their communities, girls are less valued than boys.

"[The ad] is devaluing girls in that sense – boys are allowed to grow and develop whereas little girls stay in the home."

She complained to ANZ.

An ANZ spokeswoman, Astrid Smeele, confirmed the billboards' removal.

"The billboard was used in a couple of locations in Auckland and Wellington, and we've decided to take it down as it was never intended to offend anyone."

Although only Ms Tea had complained, the bank decided to take the billboards down anyway, Ms Smeele said. "These billboards get changed regularly anyway so it was not a big deal."

The billboards were part of a wider advertising campaign, which had received "extremely positive" feedback.

Funny how their "Perfect World" ads is so much like the long running American pharmacy Walgreens "Perfect Town" ads. I like the new Simon Baker aka Patrick Jane ads, at least they don't look and sound to "copycat".

It's an ugly tradition around the world and echoed weakly here that men are the actual people in society and the value of a girl is only in her ability to fetch a good price or otherwise confer wealth to her family through an approved or arranged marriage.

A father's regard for a son is mainly in the extension of his ego. In contrast, the father's regard for his daughter is only in his exclusive ownership of her sexuality, which he has the sole right to dispose of as he sees fit. The crime of raping a girl or woman is still often regarded strictly as a property offence against her father rather than a personal offence against the girl or woman. (See Deuteronomy 22:28-29.) Women who are raped are still punished and are as rendered as disposable as a sack of Christmas puppies or indeed any New Zealand kid who fails to [thick voice] "pay their respects".

It's much worse in places like Yemen as this BBC article at http://tinyurl.com/mad-yemen shows, but the thing about never wanting a daughter to grow up is a still part of the same culture of treating women as mere goods. It's the same culture that even now, is encouraging the Republicans to push a bill that is to re-legalise martial rape in the U.S.A. after it was abolished in 1991 there and 1985 in NZ. (I wonder what the people who reflexively decry the "PC brigade" think about marital rape.)

ANZ ROCKS

Sigh - attempting to antagonise me is not the way to convince me to stop. Surely you know that by now.

@KingFrancis: You might have misunderstood me. On the basis of one complaint, perhaps my billboard should have been taken down.

Your comments not only show you as hypocrites, but ones that just don't understand your own point of view and how it applies right back at you.

#99: Just grow up. You insult yourself more than anyone else.

More "PC gone mad" comments I see. How original.

@edith#95

thanks a lot. we nearly had him gone and you ruined it.

Gravey   #97   09:06 pm Oct 21 2010

@Edith: Thank you for that. I am genuinely touched and humbled.

I will concede that I am somewhat of a prolific poster, but I guess you could say this is my hobby.

I encourage people to comment on as many things as they can - anything they have a strong opinion about. Expression is how things change.

I was very tempted to concede completely and go away on the basis of one complaint.

I find the Mad Butcher ads, Briscoes ads, Harvey Norman ads and any ad featuring the All Blacks (yawn) offensive.

Since only one complaint is now required, I trust I shall never come across these examples of advertorial tedium ever again.

@jp #85 - for every person (like yourself) who wants Gravey to go away, there's another (like myself) who wants Gravey to stay. Gravey is the voice of reason in the otherwise bigoted comment section of Stuff. And if you don't like it, no one's forcing you to stay.
