Wellington writer and Dominion Post columnist Craig Cliff has scooped a major literary prize.

Winners of the Commonwealth Writers Prize were announced for Southeast Asia and the Pacific this week, with Cliff winning the prize for best first book, for his collection of short stories, A Man Melting.

He said the $2200 award was "one of the big ones - especially for first books".
