State Highway 1 is blocked while emergency services respond to a serious crash near Otaki this morning while one of the drivers has been airlifted to hospital.
Police spokesperson Kim Perks said it appeared a Ford Falcon travelling south had lost control and collided head-on with a Nissan travelling north.
The sole occupant of the Nissan, a woman in her 70s, was airlifted by the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter to Palmerston North Hospital.
The driver of the Ford was being treated by ambulance staff at the scene for moderate injuries and taken to Palmerston North Hospital along with one other occupant.
The crash happened about 8:45 this morning and the Serious Crash Unit and a rescue helicopter were in attendance.
State Highway 1 was blocked for traffic both ways at the site 1km north of Otaki at Pukehou Bend, and diversions were in place via Waitohu Rd.
