Greater Wellington Regional Council plans to spend more than $200,000 to find out the cost of upgrading and maintaining its newly acquired railway stations.
The council took ownership of 51 stations, 48 shelters, 14 overbridges and 11 subways on July 1, after the commuter-rail assets were handed over by the Government for a token $1.
Council rail project manager Angus Gabara said the assets were valued at $104 million on KiwiRail books. However, they were also a liability because many stations and associated assets were old and needed upgrading.
Mr Gabara said the council had called for tenders from contractors to assess and estimate the cost of upgrading the assets so it could work out how much it needed to spend and when.
