Vandals have tried to set fire to an artificial rugby field set up in Civic Square for kids to play the game during the Rugby World Cup.

One of the plastic goalposts was snapped by an unknown number of vandals last night, who also tried unsuccessfully to set fire to the artificial playing surface, which is fire resistant.

Wellington City Council's sports portfolio leader John Morrison was this morning furious with the damage.

''There are truckloads of kids coming down here over the next six weeks. It isn't totally brutalised at the moment but it is pretty sad to see that thugs have been trying to do this," Morrison said.

''It is so typical that they did it in the dead of night. If I had my way I'd put them in the stocks at Civic Square with a good supply of rotten eggs and tomatoes for the public to fire at them.''

Security may have to be beefed-up security at Civic Square during the world cup, Mr Morrison said.

The goal post would be replaced but luckily the fire retardant playing surface did its job and only a small section of the playing surface shrivelled by the heat. The cost of repairs has yet to be determined.

Well let that be a lesson not to build something stupid like this in the first place. If parents want their kids to run around then they'll take them to a park, theres plenty around. A bit of commonsense wouldn't go a miss with this council and the idiots it employs.

Very, very well put Simon.

I believe we need to expand Godwin's Law to include "PC" (extra points for "PC gone mad"), "Tall Poppy" and "Get a Life". As soon as you post a comment including one of these phrases your point in rendered null and void.

why do people think "the Government" can change or control peoples thinking and actions, i am referring to the comment of Desmond Tongariro "Why doesnt the government spend the same amount of time and energy as they have on the world cup on bringing NZs binge drinking scourge under control?"

People need to change their thinking and actions, Governments can't control that. The soviet Communist state Government tried to "control' people, not only did it not work (which is a good thing) but look at what they tried to do.

Binge drinking (like all anti-social behavior) isn't the Governments responsibility to change , its ours as parent, friends and members of society. We have more influence on those around us and should be using it. I'm tired of everyone wanting "the government" to change society, its not there job, its ours, ie society's.

with this field being put together on a voluntary basis with all components donated by their suppliers. For something to be offered to the public and abused as it has been makes little sense. what were they aiming to achieve?

It doesn't matter that it was an artificial RUGBY pitch. It matters that some stupid people think it is fun to destroy what someone else has worked hard to set up and pay for! How funny will it be when they set fire to a house, hurt someone or injure themselves? Seriously, grow up you and make a worthwhile contribution to society!

C'mon lads, if you want to vandalise something head out to the cutting at Miramar ;)

wayne #10: John Morrison apologists like you are hypocrites. People like you blame the 'PC Crowd' for not stopping humiliation-loving school bullies, then you scold the 'PC crowd' for railing against John Morrison's bullying fantasies. This so-called 'PC Crowd' is a scapegoat for your misplaced frustrations, obviously.

Arthur (#9 )

"Like many I have had RWC up to the eyeballs but that does mean condoning this sort vandalistic nonsense."

Ditto, Arthur.

John Morrison is one of a few people actually trying to make all this work - and then these clowns come along and damage public property. Stop going on about how sick of the RWC you are - this issue has got nothing to do with it. It's about some muppets being idiots. God, I'm sick of the moaning... The World Cup is here and it ain't going nowhere in a hurry, so why not put this energy you're wasting on moaning into something a little more positive.

lmao at some of the comments where Mr Morrison is vilified. Unfortunately these vandals would receive the best defence legal aid can obtain and one written report would go thus, So and so felt intense rage and anguish at the consumerism and corporatism that has unveiled itself in a manner that isolates those not fitting within mainstream acceptance of Rugby union or the perceived we are one stand per the RWC. So and so also felt belittled at the presence of this artificial monument to Rugby when so and so's living conditions and alienation from accepted norms prayed upon so and so's already diminished regard towards authority due to a broken upbringing and a failure to get a red bicycle for Christmas back in '98.

I agree with Mr Morrison except myself, a good flogging would go down a treat, especially before the PC brigade can quote the above in defence of the we so and so's. :))
