A Hataitai family dodged a $400 fine for mistakenly putting glass into their general recycling wheelie bin, but instead had a collector slap an official sticker on the lid with the message "No bottles dick".

EnviroWaste, which is contracted by Wellington City Council, has launched an investigation to find who penned the offensive remark in thick marker pen on the sticker and also to determine if disciplinary action is warranted.

Heather Biswell said one of her three teenagers put the wheelie bin out for collection as usual on Thursday night. The following day she found the sticker sitting on her dining room table.

It had been removed from the lid of the family's recycling wheelie bin.

The bins were introduced across the city by the council in May for all household recycling except glass, and required Wellington householders to place their glass into a separate container for the first time.

Not only does the message say "no bottles dick" but also "Wont be emptied nex time".

Ms Biswell said the inappropriate message was targeting her children who put the bin out.

"They will see that and see that it's directly and specifically aimed at them."

The Biswell household – which includes four international students who are staying with the family – admit there was glass in the bin but think the sticker message they received was over the top.

"Obviously they [EnviroWaste] are having issues for somebody to get that outraged about the whole thing ... but this is not the way to sort the problem."

An emailed complaint was sent to EnviroWaste on Friday.

Brian Russell turned up at their house on Saturday morning with apologies and promises to launch an investigation which could lead to disciplinary action.

"We were impressed with his actions," Ms Biswell said.

Mr Russell confirmed to The Dominion Post that an investigation would start today.

"It is unacceptable and is behaviour we won't tolerate."

The offending message was on an official EnviroWaste sticker and at first look appeared genuine but it had still to be "100 per cent established" that it was written by one of the company's recycling collectors, he said.

Council spokesman Richard MacLean backed Mr Russell's comments.

"If it is one of the contractors [who wrote the note] then we will be highly peeved off.

"It is little things like this that put us back quite a way in terms of getting people to like the new recycling system."

This was the first complaint about offensive sticker messages received by the council, he said.

The council can fine the householder up to $400 for placing glass in their wheelie bins. By the end of August, seven litterbugs had been fined.

Just apologise and give her the fine.

btw. 4 international students and 3 kids of her own? Really?

This is really funny. It may not be appropriate for the council contractors to call the Biswell's a "dick" but that's exactly what they are. It's not hard to follow recycling rules.

I feel sorry for the Biswell kids who are probably being teased at school over this. They can thank their Mum for going to the press for that.

@FC_Shaza#61 - If the recycling bins are collected like ours is, it's just the trucks picking up the bins automatically without staff manually emptying the bins. If you put cardboad next to the bins they have to hire extra people to pick this up which defeats the purpose of having the trucks and drives up the cost for rate payers. Why don't you just recycle the cardboard bit by bit each week? That's what we did when we had lots of cardboard packaging from our new furniture. It's not hard.

What, Josh Collins did a 3m skid on his new bike? We need to hear more about this one. What sort of bike was it? Did anyone get a video?

Come on man, you can't just leave it at that. The public needs to know!!!

Recycler #62 Yes, kiwi`s are actually quite proud of their rudeness, lack of empathy, cliche sense of perceived humour? They are the perfect group for internet discussions, and i have`nt mentioned the males yet. You have picked this up well after only two years - man i have had 45 years of it.

How long have we had this recycling system? 5 months? Seriously, it doesn't take a genius to figure out not to put glass in with plastics does it?

PreciousSam   #64   05:21 pm Sep 12 2011

Seriously? I can think of many things that could have been written on there but weren't. Drink a cup of concrete and harden up lady. The word 'dick', even used in a derogatory manner (my experience is that is usually used in jest), is right up there with being called an 'egg', or a 'wally'. Nothing to curl up and cry about.

This is news??? Good Golly I also heard today that a little girl fed her first pet lamb at the Ohakune Kindy, and then lamb liked it, Johnny Davis fell off his scooter at the Gore Bogan festival, Josh Collins did a 3 metre skid on his new bike at the Balcutha annual skid competition, Kate Lewis won a ribbon for the best poerty at the Eketahuna book club and Mavis Davis won the best cake competition at the Murchison swingers club. Come on what will off shore people think of NZ when they read this about a rubbish bin.

I cannot believe how many commentators think it is acceptable to treat other people like this and call them that. What sort of people are you? Yes, there is a system and people need to follow the rules to make it work but calling someone else a dick is never ever acceptable and especially not whilst doing your job. I have lived in NZ for 2 years and am still surprised how foul-mouthed and rude people are. I saw someone in a car open the door at a red light and drop the rubbish out last week. There are lots of people here who need to sort out their attitudes and get a grip.

The council contractors are useless. We just moved into our new house and had a lot of carboard boxes. Naturally they didn't all fit in the bin so we crushed them and put them in a pile next to the bin. Unfortunately the council guidelines must be followed instead of any form of common sense. So now any recycling that overflows the bins will be found in general rubbish. Moral of the story, council guidelines are more important than the environment,
