Wellington cafe culture is going to the dogs, with one business unveiling a designer canine menu – complete with doggoccinos and pupsicles.

Beach Babylon in Oriental Pde began catering for its new breed of customers during the weekend with dog beds, hooks for leashes and specially crafted canine beer.

The alcoholic concoction of beef stock mixed with Tuatara draught beer is strictly "R18 months" and is served in a stainless steel bowl.

Manager Simon Holtham has taste tested the menu, which he says is fit for human consumption.

The idea of the menu is to enable dog owners to relax with their lattes while their pooches chow down on $3 pea and ham gazpacho made with ham off the bone, or the deluxe mutt mince served cold for $8.

So far customers had not complained about the influx of dogs lazing about the tables and eating like kings, Mr Holtham said.

Twenty per cent of the dog menu profits will go to the SPCA.

Laura Humphreys of Pet Angels helped create the dog-friendly atmosphere and encouraged other cafes to cater for man's best friend after hearing of similar enterprises overseas.

The Fox #6: Get a grip. Maybe this cafe should donate all profits for the year to a charity too, right? Some people....

Brilliant. Beach Babylon is a great Wellington cafe (for humans) and I look forward to having a beer with the local dawgs on the next sunny Oriental Parade day.

yuk - that's the last time I'll be going to Beach Babylon. Dogs don't belong in restaurants.

Fantastic idea I think its great will definately bring my little poppet for a treat. Not sure I'll let her get into the alcohol menu but mutt mince sure sounds doggylish.

Obviously these doggie owners aren't part of the group of persons living in poverty.

Prices look good, can humans order the same dishes?

Great idea - I have always felt Wellington is very anti dog even compared to Auckland. I woudl worry about yappy lapdogs, they are no worse than the Sunday screaming kids

This in a country where kids are going to school with no breakfast or lunch, brilliant!

trevor why do you find this disturbing? If you find an article on a just a dog cafe disturbing then how the hell do you see an article on the high level of child abuse, alcohol related offences in this country?? Jeez boyo....

society is already broken and it has nothing to do with animals. How people treat other people is what has broken society.

So what if there is a dog cafe, good on them, what people do with their money & time is their business, if they want to spend it on their pets so be it. nobodies business but theirs what they do with it.

Re beer - article refers to specially crafted canine beer but if in doubt ask your vet.

I just hope it doesn't get full of yappy lapdogs

A big congratulations to Simon Holtham for a wonderful idea.

Trevor - there is no suggestion whatsoever in this article that society is placing pets above humans. I trust that to balance up your comments, you are also taking the time to state how appalled you are whenever you see one of the numerous media articles on animal abuse or torture.... Perhaps not.

Beer for dogs? And how good is that for them? I'm all for furry members of the family being catered for (in fact I'd prefer to visit a dog-friendly cafe than a child-friendly one), but only if it's actually benefitting the dog. Do dogs usually drink alcohol? Is it likely to harm them?

I suppose it helps to increase the cafe's profits as animal lovers are suckers for stuff like this!
