The Johnsonville train line is now closed for the rest of today and evening commuter will be placed on buses on a reduced service.

The slip, near Wadestown this morning, was caused by heavy rain.

A TranzMetro spokeswoman said workers were still assessing the slip earlier today.

The line would remained closed until the hill above the track had been stabilised.

Buses have replaced trains until the blockage is cleared.

They would run half-hourly tonight, which is a reduction from peak-hour scheduling.

TranzMetro this afternoon confirmed it would not reopen today.

It was not immediately clear when it would be cleared.

There were also delays on the Kapiti line this morning after a commuter train broke down, blocking the line at 6am.

The train was fixed and trains were running normally by 10am.

Buses replaced trains while the blockage was cleared.

About 10 to 15 services were affected.

This slip looks bad. I mean, look at that overhang. Would anyone in their right mind travel along that stretch of line knowing that it could slip again - just like another Manawatu Gorge?

First day back after holiday on the PPM line and the "usual"... from TM. The above mentioned 2 hour trip for 50km. The slightly late 8:10 departing Param arrived in Welli at 10 or shortly after. Also heading home tonight the 17:17 that was delayed from Welli to Waikanae had nasty pungent smell from the brakes coming with passengers from a car in front of us coming in to our car. But we were assured that is not too bad by the staff, the driver would check it and we continued on. Just before the Param the smell got worse and we all were happy to get off in PPM....

#6, much like the often cited example of ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife, what you describe is not actually ironic.

Slips happen. Its unfortunate it happened today...

Oh, and if you dont like the service you get from TranzMetro by all means take an alternative. You arent forced to use them

That was fairly obvious when I saw the pictures this morning!

At 6:46 an announcement was sent out, stating that there were 1 hour delays on the Kapiti line, with normal services resuming in 2 hours. Only other announcement was an apology for delays, around 7:30.

I waited for 30 minutes from 8:28 (no commuter services going in either direction), before an attendant announced that there would no train for another 30 minutes. Gave up and went home again.

Unfortunately, normal services HAVE resumed. No trains (and this time, no replacement buses either)

Alan (#5), the point Mike (#2) was making was that the new Martangi trains are NEW. So new that they shouldn't be breaking down at all just yet.

Alan, #5 - its not an isolated incident, there have been broken down Matangi's a number of times already.

And I'd also consider that it was a bit more than a simple disruption worth only a couple of brief sentences towards the end of an article about a slip on the JVille line. My scheduled 55 minute journey from Paraparaumu this morning took WELL OVER TWO HOURS! Welcome back to work from Tranzmetro.

J'Ville line had no trains running for several days whilst work was done to prevent slips.... hmmmm irony much!!

Mike #2 - what an enlightened comment. So applying your logic anyone who has bought, say a Toyota, and it breaks down then the whole brand is 'junk' to use your argument. Anything is subject to failure at some time including these new trains.
