A man found dead in a Wellington drain likely died trying to retrieve his car keys.

Police have this afternoon named the man as Peter Black, 43, of Wellington.

Black's body was found in a stormwater drain near Te Papa by three women who had been at the Harbourside Market on Sunday.

Detective Inspector Paul Basham said preliminary results of a post mortem examination yesterday and an investigation by police indicated the man's death was accidental.

"Whilst the coroner will determine the exact cause of death, it appears Mr Black dropped his car keys down the storm water culvert and had attempted to retrieve them."

Basham said police recovered a set of keys in the storm water culvert belonging to the deceased.
