A Porirua couple are glad they didn't sell off their ailing car - because the glovebox contained a $500,000 winning lotto ticket.
The retired pair, who didn't want to be named, said they had not been able to stop laughing since they realised they won the sum in Lotto's Holiday Triple Dip promotion.
The man said they only realised today that they had won and were ''absolutely chuffed.''
''The draw was over three weeks ago but I haven't been able to check the tickets because our car broke down"
So the car sat in the couple's garage with the tickets in the car's glovebox.
''I am just so glad that we didn't dump the car, as I might have forgotten all about those tickets,'' he said.
The retiree said they remembered the tickets were in the car as they were dropping it at the mechanics.
''Maybe now we can buy a new car instead of getting the old one fixed,'' he said.
The couple bought their winning ticket from New World Porirua.
