An escaped prisoner has been recaptured after police found him hiding in the ceiling of a house in Taupo.

Jamie Paamu Hughes, 29, appeared in Taupo District Court this morning after three days on the run.

Hughes walked away from a forestry work party at Tongariro Rangipo Prison on Tuesday and hotwired a Corrections Department truck and fled to Taupo.

Police found him last night hiding in the ceiling of a house.

Hughes is charged with escaping from prison custody, theft of a Corrections Department vehicle and driving while forbidden.

He entered no plea and was remanded  in custody to March 1.

Before his escape Hughes was serving a sentence for domestic violence.

What do you make of New World's Little Shop toys?

I agree with Gareth Morgan, toys are 'brainwashing' kids.

They're harmless fun.

They're educational.

Cunning marketing but not brainwashing.
