Shoe boxes spark bomb scare at US Embassy

A pair of empty shoe boxes prompted a bomb scare near the United States Embassy in Wellington.

Police responded to a "bomb scare" after reports two suspicious people had left two boxes under the seat at a bus stop in Molesworth St this afternoon.

Inspector Dave Rose, from police central communications, said the boxes turned out to be a couple of empty shoe boxes.

"It looks like someone has bought some new shoes and left the boxes behind," he said.

However, police had to act on any reported suspicious activity, he said.

With the ICC Cricket World Cup on in Wellington there was added reason for a response, Rose said.
