The death of a Napier man this week was accidental.

Retired orthopedic surgeon James Elliott, 66, was found dead in his Bluff Hill house on Tuesday morning.

Police and ESR staff have now completed a scene examination of the house.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange said the scene examination, preliminary post mortem results and other inquiries indicated Mr Elliott's death was accidental.

"This will now be referred to the coroner, who will determine the cause of death," Mr de Lange said.

Mr Elliott was last seen alive by friends on Sunday afternoon and lived alone, police said. A family member discovered his body on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the family said the man was likely to have died no more than 24 hours before being discovered.
