A low brewing off the Wairarapa coast is due to bring strong winds and rain to Wellington.
A new low is expected to develop off the Wairarapa coast later this afternoon, bringing rain and easterlies to south-eastern parts of the North Island, MetService meteorologist Dan Corbett said.
He said the position of the new low forming off the Wairarapa remains uncertain, but the Wairarapa would probably take the brunt of the low.
Rain is likely to become heavy around the eastern hills of Wellington tonight and on Thursday.
Southwest coastal gales may affect the Wairarapa and Kaikoura coasts through tomorrow and the severe weather watch will be maintained.
The weather caused minor problems for trains and buses today.
Johnsonville trains were running 10 minutes late in case of slips and all Newlands bus services were running 10 minutes late.
