A motorist has been taken to hospital with a pole through their leg after a car crash near Lower Hutt.

A section of State Highway 2 was closed at the Melling Link and diversions were place after the single-vehicle crash.

A police communications spokesman said the crash happened just before 10pm.

The car was north bound and had flipped over on the side of the motorway, he said.

"It looks like it might have gone through the barrier and a person has got a pole through their leg.”

An ambulance communications spokeswoman said four people were in the vehicle.

Two were in serious condition and were taken to Wellington and Hutt hospitals.

Another person had minor injuries.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
