A train breakdown and signal problems have caused delays and cancellations on morning services.

A train broke down on the Hutt and Wairarapa line near Petone due to mechanical problems with the wheels, taking 20 minutes to fix and causing delays on services into Wellington.

An ensuing issue with signalling, also in Petone, compounded the problem and caused delays of up to 45 minutes, a Kiwirail spokeswoman said.

The 10.25 service from Masterton to Wellington was running up to 40 mins late this morning due to the earlier signalling issue.

Four trains were cancelled, with the 8.40am and 8.58am from Wellington to Melling and the 9.01am and 9.31am  from Melling to Wellington stopped due to signalling issues at Petone.

Services are also running up to 15 minutes late on the Johnsonville line between Johnsonville and Wellington due to a mechanical fault.

Normal services should resume by 10am.

Buses will be operating between Petone and Melling from 9:10am- 2:39pm today due to staff training.
