Wairarapa motorists are being warned not to buy petrol for a teenage solvent abuser who has been banned from service stations in the region.

Police say reports have occurred of the man, described as a Maori in his late teens, asking motorists and customers at service stations to buy petrol for him. A known solvent abuser, the teenager both sniffs and drinks the petrol, and has been trespassed from all Wairarapa's service stations.

Senior Sergeant Carolyn Watson said police were working with other agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of the teenager. "Social, health and justice agencies are all involved in this man's day-to-day well-being and are doing all we can to support this man and protect him from harm.

"And the community can help play their part too by refraining to purchase, or supply him with petrol."
