Rain could cause more landslides
Rain due this week could cause more landslides on a blocked road cutting off about 20 residents.
Gladsstone Rd near the foothills of the Tararua Range has been closed since a slip last week.
About 3000 cubic metres of soil and rock have been removed from the site and the road cleared since heavy rain caused the slip last week.
Tthere is still unstable material hanging over the site creating a hazardous environment, a Horowhenua District Council spokesman said.
About 30 property owners, including lifestyle block owners and retired people, live in the small community which relies on Gladstone Rd for access.
They have been crossing a forestry block to get back and forth to school and work.
Geotechnical abseilers assessed the site yesterday and confirmed large amounts of unstable material high above the road.
It is believed more rain forecast over the next week will bring down the unstable material onto the road.
Gladstone Rd will remain closed until it is deemed safe for traffic, the council says.
