Police have named the 40-year-old Paraparaumu motorcyclist who died after crashing into a power pole.

William Cue Jonas died in Wellington Hospital with his family at his side after he crashed into a power pole in Ruapehu St at 8.39am on Sunday.

Family were with him when life support was switched off on Sunday night.

Formerly from the Hutt Valley, Mr Jonas has other family in Australia.

Inspector Mike Coleman said Mr Jonas was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Wellington Hospital with critical injuries.

"The motorcycle left the road and appears to have hit a power pole while [Mr Jonas] was thrown into the front fence of a private house," he said.

Nobody else was involved in the accident.

Police are seeking any witnesses to the crash.
