A couple who took part in a threesome with a girl, 15, in their care have had their names released.

Miramar's Rebecca and Gary Wesley had taken the girl in after trouble in her own hometown, but they sexually abused her, sleeping with her. The girl, a distant relative, was also given cannabis.

Wellington District Court judge Bruce Davidson jailed Gary Wesley, 46, for four years and nine months and his wife Rebecca Wesley, 34, for three years in March.

A jury had found both guilty of sexual connection with the girl at least five times in the few months she was living with them in 2008. The man was also found guilty of giving her cannabis and doing an indecent act.

The judge said the girl was taken into their home into what should have been a safe environment and that was abused.

Rebecca Wesley had appealed against her sentence and Judge Davidson's refusal to grant permanent name suppression. However, the Court of Appeal said the sentence was proportionate to the offending. The victim did not want the pair's name suppressed to protect her identity.

Gary Wesley has a previous conviction from 1990 for sexual connection with Rebecca Wesley, who later married him.
