A woman is dead after being struck by a train in Dannevirke.

The incident occurred near Allardice St about 8pm yesterday.

Police said the woman appeared to have been lying on the tracks, and died instantly.

The section of the tracks she was found on was well away from any roads or pedestrian crossings.

The woman was middle aged and of European descent, police said.

The death has been reported to the coroner and police investigations were continuing.

The woman's death came on the first day of Kiwirail's rail safety week.

Kiwirail senior communications advisor Candice Johanson said the train, which was running from Napier to Palmerston North, was delayed for two-and-a-half hours. It was the only train delayed.

The driver was relieved from duty and given counselling, she said.

What do you think of the white peace poppy campaign?

I'm all for the white poppies.

I like the idea, but the timing's wrong.

It's contemptible and insulting.

I don't care.
