A man has been charged with indecently assaulting a 16-year-old girl on a bus to Wellington.

Senior Sergeant Alasdair Macmillan said the 38-year-old Picton man came and sat beside the girl on an Intercity Auckland to Wellington bus trip when it went through Levin last night.

After a conversation he put his hand on her thigh. She asked him to remove it but he refused.

When she made a loud objection another passenger confronted the man and there was a tussle when the bus stopped at Waikanae about 7.30pm.

Police were called but the time they arrived the passenger who had defended the girl had left.

The man was charged with indecent assault and will appear in Porirua District Court on August 21.

An Intercity Bus spokesman said passengers were transferred from the bus heading into Wellington to a TranzMetro train at Waikanae.

The train was delayed by about 20 minutes by the incident.

Are more speed cameras good for Wellington's roads?

Yes - if people go slower, they'll drive safer.

Only if they set them up in problem areas, not speed traps.

No - they're a revenue gaining tool only.

Blowed if I know.
